Northland’s Expert Prosthodontist Specialising in Dental Implants

Whereas once upon a time a missing tooth was an unfortunate fact of life, modern technology means that we no longer need to live with an unsightly gap.

Prosthodontics (an area of dentistry centred on cosmetic, implant and restorative procedures) is a burgeoning field that is constantly delivering new possibilities. For those with missing teeth, implants are now a very real option.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is the next best thing to growing a new tooth; and we all know that our adult teeth are a one-time-only offer.

Every tooth – whether it’s natural or not – needs bone to anchor it. When it comes to implants, the base needs to be screwed into the bone. The procedure begins with an anaesthetic; once this has taken effect, the gum is eased back in order to gain access to the bone.

A socket is then made for the implant. Using what is essentially a miniature drill, the socket is created gradually – starting small before slowly widening it to ensure it’s the exact right size for an implant. The implant itself is then fitted precisely into place; made from titanium, the bone isn’t irritated and instead actually takes to the implant and grows around it. It is this key factor that ensures the implant remains in place.

Once the implant has been fitted, a crown – that has been created to perfectly match the surrounding teeth – is placed over the top for a completely natural, seamless finish.
